55 Live - celebrating 55 years of Live Music at the Moon
Since 1963 The Half Moon has been regarded as one of London's most respected live music venues, hosting some incredible live acts every night of the week, including U2s first sellout UK show, kd lang’s first UK appearance and Kate Bush’s first public show.
Throughout these years The Half Moon has also been synonymous with a certain local band, The Rolling Stones, whose most recent visit was a private event held in May 2000. As well as performing as the band, individual members of the Stones have appeared here in various side-projects, and have also used the venue for rehearsal space. Other legendary acts include The Who, Van Morrison, John Martyn, Steve Marriott, Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe and Bo Diddley.
More recently we have had artists such as London Grammar, Nick Cave, Kasabian and Ed Sheeran on our stage so we thought it was the perfect time to host a year-long shindig!
We begin our celebrations with a stellar line-up for Independent Venue Week starting Monday 29th January.
Launching 55 Live with a week of classic singer-songwriters, The Half Moon is delighted to host T'Pau with Carol Decker, Katrina from Katrina and the Waves, James Walsh of Starsailor, Chris Helme from Seahorses and Mark Morris from The Bluetones. Joel Dommett provides comic relief at our Gits & Shiggles club whilst new kids on the block William the Conqueror, led by the huge vocal talent of Ruarri Joseph, are already shortlisted for the UK Americana Awards 2018 album of the year. South African favourites Boo! bring our Independent Venues Week to a rip-roaring end. We are also celebrating 55 years as a live music venue by raising money for Teenage Cancer Trust. Every time you buy a ticket and donate you will be entered into our prize draw for a very special end of year show here at The Half Moon.
We will be hosting many special events throughout the year with legends from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s so keep an eye on our listings as we have some very exciting acts coming your way! #55LIVE
These events are being documented by resident artist, Stella Tooth - “Artist residencies allow individuals to explore their practice within another community. As a trained portrait artist, fascinated by performers, I will be seeking to capture the creative energy of many of the Half Moon’s best loved acts.”
Look out for our exhibitions of Stella’s work, which is also available to purchase at the venue throughout the year.
Our friends at Fourpure have also brewed us a bespoke craft ‘55 Live’ lager to commemorate the anniversary. The tipple will be available from the bar early January.
